Here's what you need to give this a try at home(makes 1 shot):

  • 10 ml Clear Alcohol (we used Vodka)

  • 10 ml Lemonade

  • 10 ml Grenadine syrup

  • 5 ml Simple Syrup

  • 2 g Sugar

  • Shot cup

  • Syringe

  • Teaspoon

  • Small Bowls

Recipe:

  1. Dip the rim of the cup into the grenadine bowl.

  2. Dip the rim of the cup into the sugar bowl.

  3. Add Simple Syrup and Lemonade to the cup.

  4. Add Vodka (leave this out for a Molecular Mocktail). Mix with a teaspoon.

  5. Perform the blood transfusion: Place a grenadine filled syringe inside the cup to drip.

  6. Enjoy!

The science

Like many of our drinks, this effect is achieved by carefully pouring ingredients with different densities on top of each other.

The red layer is typically made with Grenadine, a sweet syrup with a vibrant colour and a high density. Vodka, with less density than the syrup, forms a separate layer and adds a kick of alcohol!
